Heineken Buys Brazilian Yerba-Mate Beer Firm Better Drinks

Heineken has acquired Better Drinks Participações, a Brazilian company blending beer and yerba-mate. The deal expands Heineken’s non-alcoholic and functional beverage portfolio.

Garry says:

Yerba-mate in beer? I tried that in Buenos Aires. Hic.

I was reading about Heineken buying a Brazilian firm called Better Drinks — yes, that’s the real name — which makes beer infused with yerba-mate. Not tea. Not coffee. Mate. The kind people sip through a metal straw like it’s a sacred pipe.

They’re based in São Paulo, started small, grew fast, and now belong to a Dutch giant who owns more breweries than I’ve missed morning buses in Bangkok.

No word on whether the new owners will keep the name. Better Drinks. Funny. Sounds like a promise. Or a threat.
